Why Use a Bike Rack?

Bicycle racks are gaining more popularity in homes as a tool for organizing bikes and bike equipment.  Originally, a bike rack is a device that a bike can securely attach to so that no one will be able to steal the bike, such as in a public park or school.  These public bike racks are securely attached to the ground or a building so no one is able to remove the bike rack from the area.

There are several types of bike racks that are used in public places.  One of them is the "wheel benders" in which one wheel of the bike is secured to the metal rack.  Although "wheel benders" are able to store many bikes at an area in one time, they aren't the most effective in keeping bikes secure from thieves since the secured bike wheel can be detached from the rest of the bike to be taken.  These types of bike racks also aren't able to offer as much support.  With storing many bikes at the same time, a bike can tip over and cause the rest of the bikes to tip over as well.

Another type of bike rack is the "Sheffield rack", which is the more modern type of bike rack available.  "Sheffield racks" consist of of thick metal bar that's in a squared-arch shape.  This type of bike rack is better able to support a bike due to the height of the rack bar top, which is in the same height as the bike frame.  This also allows the frame of the bike to be secured.

For household storing and organization uses, there are wall-mountable versions available as well as the "wheel bender" rack types.  There are even bike racks that are hoisted up as to save space and keep out of the way, such as hoisting the bikes to a wall or up near a garage ceiling.

There are also bike racks available for travel such as car bike racks.  There are many styles of car bike racks that can attach the bike to the roof of a car or the back of a car.  These auto bike racks are used as a convenient space-saving way to transport a bike from place to place, such as taking a bike along for a biking trail or such.
