Bike Safety

With increased fuel prices, more and more people are choosing to ride bikes. This cost effective mode of transportation makes sense to anyone looking to lower their gas bill, air pollution or their waistline. However, one needs to take the appropriate safety precautions when riding a bike as one does when driving a car. We all know that seat belts save lives; the same is true for safety helmets. Even the most conscience cyclist cannot control outside forces, whether it be other drivers or weather conditions. This is why it is crucial to always wear your helmet; it is the only thing that stands between you and serious injuries, possibly even death.

In addition to wearing you safety helmet, there are many things to practice to avoid danger. First, ride with the flow of traffic. Once you are on the road you are considered a moving vehicle, and all the same laws apply to you as to other cars. It is also important to follow lane markings; you should never turn left from the right lane. Two of the safest ways to turn left is to first, scan the road behind you (you may even consider investing in rear view mirrors), then either signal as if you were a car and move into the left lane before turning. In cases of extremely busy intersections, get off your bike like a pedestrian and proceed to the crosswalk. You should follow similar procedures when passing cars in traffic. Passing on the left is the safest method. Turning right is a little different, mostly because you do not have to cross into a turn lane. But be aware of right turn only lanes, and be sure to never to go straight while riding in one.

Bike riding can be a useful stress reliever, a way of relaxing to and from work or just as a leisurely outing, so take your time and enjoy it. If you are in a hurry, you shouldn’t try to cut time by weaving in and out of moving traffic, or parked cars. Do not ride in between the parked cars and the curb. Make sure you always ride in a straight line with some distance between the traffic and the parked cars. Remember to always use a bike lane if one is provided. With these simple safety tips, you can stay alert and prepared, while enjoying yourself. Have fun.
