About Bike Racks

A bike rack is used as a place to secure your bike. This is done by attaching the bike to the bike rack with a lock in order to prevent theft. The bike rack is anchored to the ground or to a solid structure such as a wall.

Bike racks that were often used years ago, those that you may remember when riding your bike to and from school, may still be used today. These types of bike racks are not the most secure since only one wheel may be locked to the bike rack. Since bicycle thefts have been on the rise in recent years, these types of racks are no longer recommended. However, they are still found in schools as well as many other public places. With these types of bike racks, a thief merely needs to detach the wheel that is locked then remove the bike’s frame and remaining wheel. In addition, these types of racks are not very supportive, because if one bike falls over, it will create a domino effect and other bikes will follow. Cyclers often refer to theses types of bike racks as “wheel benders.”

The Sheffield rack is a more modern version of the bike rack. This rack was invented in Sheffield, England (thus its name). These bike racks are composed of a thick metal bar that is shaped like a square arch, with the top portion being level with the top bar of the bike frame so that it can support the bike and the frame can remain secure.

A bike rack can also be attached to a vehicle so that it can be safely transported from one location to another.

Bike racks that have become increasingly popular in recent years are those which are built in the form of lockers. These bike lockers are advantageous for commuters who may leave their bikes at a transit station while commuting to and from work.
