Office Building
and Metro Shop Bike Racks Some
companies have specific bike parking facilities for their employees. A fence or
grid style bike rack may not be conducive to employees who park their bikes at
the office all day when at work. Some companies have implemented special bike
parking structures, as well as locations and installation requirements for those
bike parking facilities.
Bike parking should be located at convenient, well lit and visible areas. The
structures should be durable so as to support the entire bike not just one
wheel, and the rack should also be constructed so that the user can lock the
frame and wheels of the bike with a cable or U-shaped lock. It is best if the
parking is out of the way of pedestrians and motor vehicles.
When a bike is parked all day at the same location, it is especially important
that the bike be secure since thieves who troll the area looking for bikes to
steal realize that many employees are in their offices all day and will not be
claiming their bike until the end of the day. Thus, the bike sits vulnerable for
the entire day.
For long term bike parking, which would certainly include all day, the level of
security, as well as protection from the elements, is very important. It may not
be as important to the rider that the bike rack location be in an area that is
most convenient, as security will be much more of a factor.
The factors to consider for long term bike parking may include the following:
bike storage areas in the form of individual lockers for one or two bikes; bike
racks in an enclosed room which can be locked; bike racks that are monitored by
security guards or cameras; racks or lockers that can be seen by employees.
When all day parking is utilized, bike racks should be covered to protect them
from the weather elements.
In this day and age of high fuel costs and crowded streets, more and more
buildings are installing the latest, most secure bike racks for employees, since
many of them find it is more convenient and cost effective to ride a bike to and
from work.
